Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children hero arrives stateside...
In 2004, Square Enix announced the release of a computer animated film sequel to one of the most popular video games of all time: Final Fantasy VII. Entitled Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the film (which was released in Japan late last year and has a planned direct-to-DVD release this spring in the USA) features numerous fan-favorite characters, including Tifa Lockheart, Vincent Valentine, and the evil swordsman Sephiroth. Square Enix, realizing the potential market for collectibles, released action figures of the three previously mentioned characters last year.
Of course, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children can have only one main character: the tragic, lonely, and heroic "wannabe" ex-SOLDIER Cloud Strife. Now, thanks to Diamond Comic Distributors importing what was once thought to be a Japanese exclusive, the Cloud Strife and Fenrir Play Arts Boxed Set has arrived in the USA and Final Fantasy fans in the states have a new centerpiece for their collection.
PACKAGING
Packaged in a massive window box, this deluxe set is sure to impress ¡§Mint in Box¡¨ collectors with its beautiful graphics, expertly laid out across the front. The back of the box features numerous small pictures and one large picture of Cloud and Fenrir as well as four small pictures of the other figures in the Play Arts FF VII: AC series.
The package securely holds the pieces. Each piece is held in place by two molded plastic bubbles which form fit around them and ensure they won¡¦t move or break. (Fenrir features the only twist tie, due to its size).
SCULPT
Designed by the talented Japanese artists Tetsuya Nomura and Takayuki Takeya (respectively), both Cloud and Fenrir are captured perfectly in three-dimensional form. The artists at Square Enix spared no expense to ensure the figures include each and every detail from the film.
Cloud¡¦s motorcycle shares a name with the mythological wolf-monster Fenrir. According to Norse legend, only one man dared to feed and care for Fenrir. In the Final Fantasy world, that man is Cloud. The bike features an almost organic design, with metal flowing in and out of the cycle body¡¦s main shape. Featuring numerous exhaust pipes, drive shafts, and steering forks, Fenrir looks as fast as it is beautiful.
Sitting atop Fenrir with sword drawn, Cloud makes for an intimidating foe. The above pose, taken directly from the film, shows the versitility of the figure and the various looks the figures can assume.
Previously available only as a Japanese exclusive with the DVD, Cloud¡¦s facial sculpt has since been drastically improved (above). No longer does he suffer from the sagging hair or ¡§plain jane¡¨ face. Now, Cloud features spiked hair and a look of determination spread across his mug. Only a fool would mess with this warrior¡K
Cloud also includes minute details like small sculpted zippers on his boots and pant legs, a ribbed sweater with collar, and a tiny wolf earring in his left ear. The pants and tank-top sweater with sleeve feature a ¡§wind-blown¡¨ sculpt, which fits considering he¡¦s meant to sit astride a monstrous engine with wheels.
No matter if you¡¦re a fan of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children or not, those with an eye for beauty are sure to appreciate this set.
